Early Spring is the perfect time to get your irrigation system in top shape before the growing season kicks in. Here's a detailed checklist of things to inspect and test, especially focusing on key components like the pump, VFD (Variable Frequency Drive), and phase converters. Here is what we reccomend:
- Pump (Centrifugal, Submersible, etc.)
-
- Inspect suction lines for clogs, air leaks, or damage.
- Check for leaks around seals and connections.
- Inspect the pump housing for cracks or corrosion.
- Test motor function — Ensure the rotation is still correct. Listen for unusual sounds (grinding, whining, etc.).
- Check bearings and lubrication (if applicable).
- VFD (Variable Frequency Drive)
-
- Inspect wiring and connections for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage from rodents or surge events over the winter.
- Inspect capacitors for bulging or leakage.
- Clean vents and fans to prevent overheating.
- Test grounding as conditions may have changed.
- Test input voltage to check to make sure all phases are present, and voltage is within tolerance.
- Power unit up — ensure pressure settings are still dialed in and that the transducer is reading correctly. Use Read Measured Values.
- Monitor for error codes or warnings on the display.
- Run a soft start test — the motor should ramp up smoothly.
- Phase Converter
-
- Test grounding as conditions may have changed.
- Inspect capacitors for bulging or leakage.
- Check voltage output with a multimeter — ensure balanced and correct phases.
- Clean air vents and check for rodent nests if stored over winter.
- Electrical System (General)
-
- Check all breakers, relays, and contactors for functionality.
- Inspect wiring for rodent damage, corrosion, or wear.
- Ensure GFCIs and disconnects work properly.
- Piping and Valves
-
- Walk the lines for leaks, cracks, or heaving from frost.
- Flush the lines to clear sediment and debris.
- Inspect backflow preventers and test if required by code.
- Test each valve for function and responsiveness.
